Choosing and air purifier

Sealing up your home against the chill of winter is a good way to save on energy bills — but it could also keep stale air in, which can trigger allergies.  So – The Good Housekeeping Research Institute looked at portable air-purifiers as a solution.   Good Housekeeping’s Technical Director John Kupsch says, “The best models on the market are those that use a motorized fan to move a lot of air in and out of the room.”   To help choose the correct size unit for your room – look for a C.A.D.R. number on the box.    Kupsch says, “C.A.D.R. stands for clean air delivery rate and it’s a certified number that actually tells you how much clean air is being delivered to the room.”   Good Housekeeping says that C.A.D.R. ratings on air purifiers range from 25 to 440.  The highest number is the fastest clean air delivery rate – so Good Housekeeping says to look for as high a C.A.D.R.

Teen May Lose Some Vision After Being Shot With Paintball

Teen May Lose Some Vision After Being Shot With Paintball

Someone with a paintball gun opened fire on a 13-year-old girl. It didn’t cost her her life, but she could lose some of her vision. One of the paintballs, fired from a car, hit the girl in the eye. She was walking home from Robinswood Middle School, near Balboa Drive in Orlando, when she and her little brother were hit. The girl’s mother said surgery went well, but said doctors won’t know for a couple of months if her daughter will ever regain full use of her vision. Even if Jacinda McLean took off her eye patch, she still wouldn’t be able to see out of her right eye. In fact, she may never see out of it again. “It just felt like somebody threw a ball at my face and it hurt so bad,” the teen girl said. .

Flowers Feel The Freeze

Flowers Feel The Freeze

Flowers are a token of affection for Valentine’s Day, but they rely on nice weather, which much of the country has been without this winter. Is it going to take a toll on your pocketbook this holiday? They’re calorie-free, unlike chocolates, more sophisticated than a stuffed animal, and during the week preceding the celebration of St. Valentine, they’re about 50 percent more expensive than normal: roses. “You’ll find after Valentine’s day we’ll revert to their normal price.” Says florist John Lendenmann. The price of a dozen long-stemmed roses will drop from 65 to 75 dollars a dozen, down to 40 to 50 dollars. He says this year there’s more to the price hike than the legions of lovers, “One of the reasons is that California has had a lot of bad weather.” Florist Gina Cordova agrees, “Our cost is a lot higher just because of the big frost in California affected a lot of the flowers.” Why are valentine’s blooms so much more expensive to begin with? “The demand of roses sometimes increases the price…it’s the old story of supply and demand.” Lendenmann says, but Cordova says that’s not the whole story, “The rose bowl uses up a lot of roses and flowers so there’s actually a shortage at Valentine’s Day.” Lendenmann suggests choosing unusual blooms may be the only way around it, “There’s more creativity into the arrangement. You have a big variety of flowers and it’s a nicer surprise instead of always getting roses.” If you absolutely must have a dozen beautiful red roses to celebrate Valentine’s day florists offer a couple of tips: by going with the medium-stemmed instead of long-stemmed roses you’ll save on average 10 to 15 dollars, and by picking up the flowers instead of having them delivered you’ll save 8 to 10 dollars.” Florists say they do 50 to 80 percent more business on Valentine’s Day.

Mardi Gras Overshadowed by Toxic Trailers

The national spotlight returns to New Orleans for next week’s famed Mardi Gras celebration. Large and small towns throughout the region are celebrating this carnival season but many residents are still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Hundreds of flooded homes are still awaiting repair, many just miles from the beads and streamers along Bourbon Street. This Mardi Gras, thousands of people are still waiting for insurance payments and federal funding in order to return and rebuild their homes. Others are experiencing the frustration of living in cramped FEMA trailers that are causing them serious health problems. Testing by the Sierra Club in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama showed that 83 percent of trailers tested had formaldehyde levels above the EPA limit of 0.10 parts per million. “FEMA trailers should come with a warning sign: ‘HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH!,’ said Leslie March, chair of the Sierra Club’s Gulf Coast Environmental Restoration Taskforce.

Zale discloses settlement with former finance executive

Texas Jewelry retailer Zale today agreed to pay former Chief Financial Officer Mark Lenz nine months of salary and cash for his retirement benefits. The Irving-based company said the salary payments would total just over 207-thousand dollars. The cash representing vested retirement benefits would be another 116-thousand dollars. Lenz will also receive medical and other benefits through April. The nation’s largest jewelry store operator placed Lenz on administrative leave in May. Outside auditors determined he hadn’t properly disclosed delayed vendor payments worth more than eight (M) million dollars in 2005. His contract wasn’t renewed. Zale said it reached a settlement with Lenz last week. Copyright 2007 The Associated Press.
