New supercars at Geneva

Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera

Also upping the ante is Lamborghini with the Gallardo Superleggera, a lightweight version of the magnificent Gallardo four-wheel drive supercar. Power is up to 530 bhp at 8,000 rpm. Originally, the engine developed 500 bhp, and this was upped to 520 bhp last year. This is quite an improvement, and takes the specific power output to 106 bhp per liter.

The engine is coupled to Lamborghini’s e-gearbox, a sequentially controlled unit. This box works well when hurrying, but like most is not quite so good when driving more slowly.

To improve performance further, Lamborghini engineers are using some lightweight materials in the Gallardo Superleggera. For example, the engine cover is carbon fibre and transparent polycarbonate, and polycarbonate is used to replace some glass. The rear diffuser and mirror cases are now carbon fiber, as is the tunnel cover.

The Gallardo Superleggera has forged aluminum wheel rims and Pirelli Zero Corsa tires. It weighs in at 2,930 lb (1,330 kg), which is 225 lb (100 kg) lighter than the standard car.

Audi 5 Coupe, too

Audi released its new Audi 5 coupe at Geneva – actually this is a whole range of cars including A5 and S5. It is smart looking coupe, with the characteristic grille, and a semi-fastback design. Very much an Audi. It is a compact car, just 5 in longer than a BMW 3 Series coupe. Hottest is the Audi S5, which is powered by a 350 bhp version of Audi’s briliant V-8, also found in the R8 and RS4. This takes the smooth coupe to 60 mph in under 5 seconds, which is supercar country.

Saturn Sky Red Line

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

With 260 bhp in a reasonably light car, the Saturn Sky Red  Line will more than keep up with the Jones’s – it will leave many of them standing. It is a decent looking car, based on a concept designed in the UK – the Vauxhall VX Lightning.

Whereas the Saturn Sky Red  Line’s sister car, the Pontiac Solstice has not earned many plaudits for its road manners, maybe the Saturn Sky Red  Line will. Pity about the awful name – after all the red line is a lowly 6,300 rpm -but otherwise here is a car that could be fun.

~~Smart looking roadster

It looks pretty good, starting with that big air intake below the shallow grille – looks almost as if came straight from the Vauxhall concept car – nicely shaped headlamps molded into the fenders, which have sculptured lines. Also, you get the same sort of air outlets behind the front wheels that they have on Corvettes, and no doubt many buyers will be opting for the Saturn Sky Red  Line because they can’t afford the big V-8.

What Others Say

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

In a recent interview, Debra Mastaler of AllianceLink.com was very brief stating, “Webmasters understand links carry value, they just fail to realize that ultimately links support content rather than define it. Her wisdom is evident as usual — you have to put the horse before the cart. Link building is like any other marketing channel. As Patrick Moorhead of Avenue A | Razorfish explains, “Channels should not drive decisions and execution. Rather, insights into products and consumers will lead to unique messaging, which will naturally indicate the correct channels to effectively deliver that messaging. This defines how link building should support content, not the other way around.

Mike Grehan, author of Search Engine Marketing, provided his usual matter-of-fact opinion: “Emulating natural growth in link building is being led by the nose, as far as I’m concerned. When I worked with a friend who opened a restaurant in London, we could have spent months trying to emulate ‘quality’ linkage data using technology. But my mission was to get the three most important online food critics in London to visit the restaurant. Whether they reported online that the restaurant was good or bad — I knew we’d still get the links! And we did, so it worked. Emulate or create? I’d rather lead than follow.

Cut the fees and get more retirement cash

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Are you paying too much in fees on your IRA  or 401 (k) retirement fund?

If you are paying too much in fees for your 401 (k) retirement fund, you could lose 15-20% of the total benefits over the years you are saving. In fact, an increase of 1% will rob you of 17% of your total savings. This is  a huge amount, and you lose it because as your retirement fund builds up so the fees increase - they are usually a percentage of the total fund.  Make sure you keep as much as you can, and don’t let the fund managers and advisors get it!

To get the amount of retirement money you thought you were going to get you might need to postpone retirement by two or three years, and I’m sure you don’t want to do that.

Research Regarding How Hoodia Works

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research were not much concerned about how does hoodia work. They were evaluating what is called “bush food” to determine toxicity and possibly for use as food or drugs. The hypothalamus hoodia connection was not made at this time. They did discover that animals which were given an extract of hoodia gordonii lost weight, but the weight loss did not appear to be due to any toxic affect. At that time they were able to identify what they believed to be the active molecule in hoodia gordonii and named it p57.

Like many subjects relating to the human body, the question; how does hoodia work is still being studied. Many scientists agree that it does work as an appetite suppressant and on-going clinical trials are mostly concerned with issues concerning dosages, drug interactions and other factors affecting positive results. The connection between a portion of the brain called the hypothalamus, hoodia gordonii and appetite was made by scientists at Brown University. The San of southern Africa knew nothing about the affect that hoodia had on the brain. They only knew that it alleviated their hunger and thirst.

The History Of Hoodia Gordonii

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

The giant pharmaceutical company Pfizer, which had teamed up with Phytopharm, and funded much of the research on hoodia, abandoned the venture when making a pill out of the active ingredient seemed to costly to develop.

For now it is sold in weight loss formulations, usually accompanied by green tea extract to accelerate the weight loss results even more.  Read more about the history of hoodia.

Baby Photo Announcements

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Nothing is more touching to friends and family than baby photo announcements. Many of us tend to think that one announcement is as good as another but I have found that adding an image of your new arrival in the presentation makes the note extra special for the recipients. I only wish that I would have considered using baby photo announcements for my first child.

Dogs for Adoption

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

I have a friend who would give just about anything to get a dog. She is always online looking for dogs for adoption, though she knows she is only torturing herself. She is married to a man who she no longer loves, but until she can get out, she is stuck with him and his rules. She wants a dog, and he refuses to even consider getting one. She guesses that is for the best, as it will just be one more thing to deal with in the divorce, but that doesn t stop her from looking and dreaming.

Ecommerce Ethics? Scams vs the importance of ethical conduct

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

The annonymity of the web makes the importance of a trust, privacy, and ethics an incredibly important aspect of a customer experience.  When an online company employee breaches basic ecommerce ethics by writing “please ignore the teleseminars rather taking the time to post senseless complaints” in response to customer complaints about implied breaches of contract, you have perfect example of a lack of basic understanding of both customer service and ethics.  The manner in which you deal with and respond to ethical breaches is critically important in how your customers will perceive both your personal and corporate ethics.

Greg Watson consults with entrepreneurs and ecommerce professionals on creating a corporate code of ethics.  Ecommerce organizations can avoid ethical breeches and create a systematic process for handing ethics issues through the creation of an ethics policy, a corporate code of ethics, and an independent ethical review process that can assess a potential ethical lapse when brought to their attention.

Usborne Books: The Best Books for Children

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

In 1973, Peter Usborne decided that educational, nonfiction books would need to change in order to compete with TV and comics. He borrowed some ideas from these two media and hired educational consultants to oversee the writing to make sure that the books would satisfy the child’s interest but also arouse it.

Explanatory books which merely explain are doing only half the job; if a book fails to make its subject attractive and interesting to the reader, chances are that the explanation will fail. Usborne Books are designed graphically to draw the students in, to make them want to learn the material and to help them retain that knowledge. The magic of Usborne Books is that they make both reading and learning fun and not a boring or intimidating experience. Peter Usborne set out to break down a child’s resistance to reading and learning at home. These books are so well organized that children absorb and recall much of the vast amount of information presented.
