The deadlift is a great weight training exercise for not only the lower back, but the entire body since you have to use so many different muscles to perform it. You need to use your leg power as much as possible to get the weight off the floor when you deadlift and let the lower back take over towards the top of a rep. Always start your lower back workouts with deadlifts.
