Different Types Of Colitis
Depending on the location and the extent the inflammation has spread to, ulcerative colitis is classified into different categories. Ulcerative proctitis, proctosigmoidiitis, left sided colitis, universal colitis, and fulminant colitis are the various types. In extreme cases, the patient may have to be hospitalized in order to remove the colon surgically, so that the colon does not rupture. Though the intensity of the inflammation may vary in a patient with ulcerative colitis, the location and extent of the condition are usually stagnant. For instance, if a patient of ulcerative proctitis develops the condition again after treatment, the inflammation is usually restricted to the rectum.
