Oklahoma The Musical
May 31st, 2008Musicals go in and out of style but some classics remain perennial favorites. Oklahoma the musical contains catchy songs to sing along with and captures the imagination with its tale of the rivalry between farmers and cowboys in 1906. Curly McLain is a cowboy and Laurey Williams is a farm girl who fall in love in the midst of this tense situation. Their romance is further complicated by moody farmhand, Jud Fry, who also wants to make Laurey his own.
The show was the first that Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote in partnership and it debuted on the Broadway stage in 1943. It was an instant hit with audiences and critics and successful revivals and national tours followed. The West End premier in London was in 1947.
