Police Jobs Are Better Now

November 19th, 2008

My dad and his two brothers were cops and most their friends were cops, so I knew quite a few cops as I was growing up. The guy that was my dad’s partner never had anything good to say about police jobs, I wondered all the time why he even did it. All I could figure was that even though the paycheck was disappointing to him, he was in it just for the check. After he was on the force for a few years, he was shot while at a domestic disturbance call. He had to quit the force because the gunshot disabled him. He then had to endure several surgeries with lengthy hospital stays. Unfortunately, workman’s comp didn’t want to pay all his hospital bills. The union’s insurance company wasn’t much help either. Not to hard to see why it was so hard to fill police jobs in our city. This was back in the early 90’s, so I hope I’m correct in saying that things are better now. If we want police to care about the public and their work, we have to treat and respect them a lot more than my dad’s partner was treated.
