How to know if you have a termite problem

Termites are insects that have been around for a long time, stay away from the limelight, burrow underground, and feed primarily on wood. While not all termites eat just wood but also other plant debris, there are species that do in fact have a taste for soft wood – The wood in your house. Here’s more facts on termites.

The most destructive termites are the subterranean termites belonging to the Coptotermes genus, which is primarily an Asian species but has spread throughout much of the world. These subterranean termites gain access to your home from deep underground tunnels fanning out from their nests, and once they have gotten a foothold, they build mud tunnels throughout the entire length of the wooden beams in your home, and hollow it out from within.

The signs of termite infestation are pellets (their droppings), mud tunnels, damaged wood beams, and sometimes, a rattling sound which stems from the termite soldiers sounding an alarm signal. Sometimes, wooden objects left out in the garden will get eaten by termites, and that is also an indication that you might have a termite problem.
