My Morning Smoothies

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

I have always tried to do healthy things to offset all the UNHEALTHY things I do in my day to day living. We all do them – we’re just mostly unaware.

Take for example smoking or even drinking soda pop or using excessive sugar and salt in an don everything. Then think about the foods we eat that have all kinds of fake stuff and preservatives in them. Man – it is really hard to be healthy in this so called modern world!

So I take vitamins and have been making fresh juice evry morning for quite a few years now and it has helped substantially. My secret weapon is a spinach smoothie – with other good stuff mixed in. Now – after 4 months of switching from juice to smoothies I can honestly say that move has been making a huge impact on my looks and the way I feel.

Not everyone is convinced that food or more particularly a gigantic glass of freshly blended vegetables and fruits can do that much benefit to our bodies and minds. But I am nt the only one who has discovered this. Many people are sold on the benefits of having massive amounts of fruits and veggies blended and therefor made more microavailable to our systems.

So – if you ever feel down or just not at the top of your game and need something to help revitalize and boost yourself back up to optimum health – I suggest getting out that high powered blender and dropping in an apple, some berries, a few grapes and a giant handful of spinach or some other green veggie. You’ll feel good and over time you’ll be correcting all those deficiencies and fixing what that fructose and preservative crap is doing to you!

Memorial Day Recipes

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Have salad as a side. In addition to salad as a healthy side option include fresh cut up vegetables and low fat dressing as a dip for sides as well as appetizers. By having these available for your guests you may be surprised to discover that others appreciate the healthy options just as much as you do. Even cooked vegetables that aren’t dripping in cheese sauce, butter, or other types of fats provide a better option than high carb, high fat sides such as macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and mashed potatoes.

Have fruit on hand to help diminish the craving for sweets. While I would not dream of completely depriving yourself of dessert I recommend two steps to help make the fight against fat a more survivable contest of wills. First, have at least one sugar free dessert option available for those that are dieting and offer fruits. By combining the healthier sweet treat of fruit with a delicious sugar free dessert in a smaller portion you are doubling the health benefits. See enameled cast iron Dutch oven.

Finally, homemade ice cream has for a long time been a favorite family tradition for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. You do not have to say no to all the good things in life even if you are trying to watch what you eat. By eliminating the empty calories many of us consume in drinks, and following the steps above you just might find that ice cream is an option for you after all without completely blowing the good work you’ve done. Remember that moderation is the key.

If you allow yourself a taste of the really good stuff along the way you will be much less likely to fail in your healthier living efforts. In addition to watching the calories you put into your body on Memorial Day be sure to take stock of the calories you burn. Go for a walk, take a hike, pick up a game of flag football with the family, or dance with the little ones in the afternoon. Consistent efforts to burn more calories while consuming less will net the greatest results whether it is a holiday or not. Check out enamel cast iron Dutch oven for more info.

Tea As Natural Health Alternative

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Health minded individuals look to natural alternatives to fight off illness and chronic disease, and enhance general well being. One of the most popular natural food choices is green tea because of its known health benefits. Green tea is derived from the same plant as black tea, they are just processed differently.

According to various online sources, green tea contains polyphenols, collectively known as catechins, which are powerful antioxidants shown in recent studies to fight viruses, slow aging, and fight free radicals that can damage cells and leave the body susceptible to cancer and other diseases. Some other benefits of green tea: lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels, reduces angiotensin II levels that affect blood pressure, fights allergies, and strengthens the immune system. As you can see, there are many healthy benefits associated with regular consumption of green tea. See Japanese tea sets.

Quality green tea can be purchased just about anywhere, including natural grocers and online. The exact content of catechins may or may not be listed on the packaging, so do research before purchasing, so that what you”re buying gives you the most health benefits of green tea. Visit Japanese cast iron teapots for more information.

Healthy Party Finger Foods do Exist

Monday, December 13th, 2010

You don’t really need a Christmas, New Year’s, or Birthday party to enjoy party finger foods because they come in handy for just entertaining guests who pop round for a natter and a bite to eat. There is a downside to tasty finger foods though and that is one of being bite sized and extremely Moorish. The danger here is that it’s easy to eat this kind of food one after the other without really knowing how much one has consumed, and done on a regular basis, that’s not good for a balanced diet, health, or weight loss .

You might not think you eat a lot of finger foods, but most of us consume more than we realise. For example, anything snack that we don’t use cutlery to eat it, nor find it necessary to prepare on a plate, can be considered as finger foods. This will include, crisps, peanuts, all sweets, in fact most things that come out of a packet or tube, Finger foods are not always just cheese and pineapple on a stick, or little cocktail sausages and other such nibbles.

Most of us want to live an fit and healthy lifestyle, yet so many of us don’t diet, exercise regularly, eat well, or pursue those things that constitute a trim and fit person. With a little education (lots of that found on the internet with online articles, videos, and programs), we wouldn’t have to sit there with bits hanging over our clothes wondering why it is that we cannot lose weight. Why not make 2011 your year of self improvement? You’ll be glad you did.

A Luscious Creamy Dish Of Papa Ala Huancaina At Fiesta Limena

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Generously coated with luscious creamy cheese sauce, papa ala huancaina or Huancayo-style potatoes makes an exciting appetizer before any main course of your choice. The subtle boiled potato tastes heavenly with the aji sauce, with some fresh lettuce underneath and slices of hard boiled egg on top can complement the entire dish perfectly. It is best served, practically at anytime of the day! All the elements found in that dish harmonize well with each other that’s why whenever I order a serving of this dish at Fiesta Limena, nothing goes untouched. In fact, a serving isn’t always enough for someone who considers this Peruvian food as her favorite.

Peruvian Food in CT And Inca Kola

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

It’s nice to complement a succulent dish like Pollo ala brasa or lomo saltado with a rewarding treat of ice cold Inca Kola, which happens to be available at this Peruvian food joint in CT. Whenever I have this lemon flavored Peruvian soft drink together with a meat dish, it feels like it aids in digestion and that it takes that feeling of fullness. I usually feel languish after a heavy meal, and all I could do is procrastinate and take a nap than finish my task. Yes, I used to be very lazy but knowing that taking a nap after eating isn’t good and playing deaf about it is worse. So that’s when I realized that imbibing just a moderate amount of soda after a heavy meal works for me, which should also be done occasionally.

Quick hamburger recipes and hamburger potato casserole

Monday, October 4th, 2010

If you’re looking for some quick hamburger recipes for the grill here’s a very simple yet tasty recipe you can use as your ace in the hole when you have company but need something easy to make.

As luck would have it this burger recipe for the grill is so simple you can have your guests help and have some fun at the same time. It’s pretty much a no fuss, no muss grill recipe and it’s so simple anyone can make it to perfection.

All it takes is about 1/2 pound of ground beef per person, 1 medium potato and some chopped onion. Oh yeah, and some tin foil. This is so quick that you need to start the grill before you mess with the hamburger and potatoes.

If you want a different taste for this hamburger potato casserole you can substitute a can of cheddar cheese soup. You can also use about any cream soup you like except tomato. I know people who make it wih cream of mushroom and cream of chicken or cream of onion if you can find it. Another thing you can do is put some cheese on top of it for the last 5 minutes in the oven.

It reheats very well in the microwave and the taste of it does not change. You can freeze the leftovers and put them right in the microwave and they’ll taste even better than they did the first time.

Do NOT try to use onion chips, onion flakes or any other type of powdered onion. It won’t taste the same. Do NOT use any soups but Campbells if you want it to taste the way it’s supposed to. You can after you’ve mastered it but then you’ll know how bad it gets if you try to use generic.

Nothing Beats The Original Peruvian Huancaina Style Potatoes

Monday, October 4th, 2010

From a daily serving of potatoes, that’s where I get my carbohydrates from. Thanksgiving dinners aren’t complete without mom’s famous potato casseroles and stuffings. I’ve grown up feeding on potatoes every single day and I couldn’t think of a crop that can be prepared in a million ways and fit in from breakfast to dinner, even as a snack, like this tuber. Having originated from Peru, we also serve certain Peruvian dishes made of potatoes at home. I forgot the name of that dish but it’s like potato croquettes with meat filling and that’s my favorite. Our own version of Huancaina style potato is close, but not quite since it’s really different with aji peppers so instead, we make use of cheese pimiento spread and make a creamy sauce out of that. I must tell you, the original Peruvian style is way better than what we make at home.

Peruvian Seafood Dishes and Pisco Sour: Always a Perfect Match

Monday, September 27th, 2010

When it comes to what’s on our plates and in our glasses, it’s easier to enjoy and be satisfied once you get what you want. For the best tasting Peruvian seafood dishes, only Pisco sour provides the perfect match. I could say that Pisco sour raised the profile of Peru and its industry apart from its role as a partner to food. There is an annual “Pisco Sour Festival”every February in honor of Peru’s national drink. Since I don’t have any idea on how to mix this cocktail, I had a privilege of trying for the first time in a Peruvian restaurant in Norwalk, and it’s was probably the best of what I’ve tasted. You’d wish to have it for as long as you want.

Pisco Sour Pairing At A Seafood Restaurant in Norwalk

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Ceviche, Lomo Saltado, Anticuchos or Tiradito? I’m undecided on what to have as a side dish for Pisco Sour. My friends say Ceviche is the best match for Pisco sour. The citrus in Ceviche blends well with the alcohol and frothy bitters of Pisco cocktail without overpowering each other. We’ve tried this combination in a seafood restaurant in Norwalk and I totally agree. Perhaps I should try some pairings like Pisco Sour and a beef dish such as Lomo Saltado the next time I visit Fiesta Limena. We’re not quite sure about Pisco Sour and traditional Peruvian sweet desserts, but I think it’s worth a try. I bet anything will work with Pisco sour, it’s one of the best things that Peru could offer to the world!

What are the 10 Healthiest Foods?

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

People are always looking for an edge to improve their health. Most people by now are familiar with the concept of a balanced diet and regular exercise to look fit, feel better and improved physical health. The next step to leading a healthy lifestyle is finding out what exactly you need to bring your balanced diet up a notch. What foods are the best for you, both in terms of valuable nutrients and minerals and having good fat, fiber, and protein values. Here is a list of the 10 healthiest foods that you simply cannot ignore.

Most of the 10 healthiest foods are fruits. Having a diet that is rich in berries is vital. Berries provide vitamin C, a well-known agent against infections as well as immune system supporter. Pharmaceuticals now package vitamin C extract as a cold and flu fighter. You don’t need that with a diet rich in blueberries, strawberries, or other berries, which are also excellent antioxidants. Apples and bananas provide a lot of other rich minerals, such as potassium and citrus fruits such as lemons, limes and pineapples provide high levels of vitamin C as well. Perhaps the best superfruit of the 10 healthiest foods is the avocado. This powerhouse delivers fat that can actually lower cholesterol. Finally, though often thought of as a vegetable, tomatoes are also crucial in fighting heart disease and some kinds of cancer.

As you might expect, two of the 10 healthiest foods are vegetables. These two are broccoli and spinach. Both are low-calorie greens that pack a powerful nutritional punch. Cooking them in the microwave actually allows them to keep more vitamins than steaming or boiling. To your spinach, add some garlic, another of the 10 healthiest foods. Garlic is great for your heart health and is a powerful antibacterial.

The rest of the 10 healthiest foods are legumes and other proteins. Legumes include lentils and peas, but beans are the most exceptional of the legumes. The darker the legume, the more nutritional value, making black beans a most for any health-conscious diet. Most animal protein is high in saturated fat, but salmon is a remarkable exception. Salmon contains a high level of omega-3, which has remarkable anti-aging properties, as do walnuts, the best nut and member of the 10 healthiest foods.

So, as you look to improve your diet, including these 10 healthiest foods will surely kick start your health in no time!
