Cat Talk Can Cats Talk?

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Cats are particularly good at communicating with one another and humans. They have a considerably larger vocabulary than dogs, with most cats being able to make over 100 different sounds.

These sounds can range from purring, to hissing and growling, spitting, wailing and howling, and many different combinations in between.

They certainly do have the ability to get most of what they want from their owners, and that is why it is often said that the cat rules the house and the humans are the servants. Yes we certainly do seem to do all the running about, yet when we call the cat it is just as likely to turn around with its tail in the air and wander off.
It is this independent nature that appeals so much to so many people and that’s why cats are one of the most loved pets in the world.

Cats are also extremely good at communicating with one another and once again with humans, by their body language. Cat owners who are tuned in to their cat’s behavior can communicate extremely well, and this also makes it a lot easier for the owner to train a cat to do particular things or to behave better.
It also allows the opportunity to become a lot more aware of when the cat is not feeling well and when a trip to the vet might be necessary.

Fortunately that is not too often if the cat has been well cared for and given good nutrition because they are extremely resilient and even the process of purring can help to stimulate healing properties within the cat.
If your cat is making a sound and it is directed towards you then you know it is trying to communicate with you and usually it is not too hard to work out what it wants.
Don’t know what your cat is trying to tell you?

You might not, if you haven’t been around felines a lot.

Pomeranian Rescue - A Great Place To Find A Pet

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

If you are thinking of adopting a Pomeranian, then one place to start looking is at a Pomeranian rescue association. This way you can get an older dog that needs a home, but might also have the hard part of training already done for you!
A very loyal breed, Pomeranian dogs are smart and eager to learn. On the other hand, they can sometimes be bold, willful and temperamental. You must train your Pomeranian firmly to let them know who is boss or they could end up ruling the roost.

The Pomeranian is perfectly suited for the show ring and also as a pet due to it’s affectionate nature and docile temper. Showing exceptional independence for a small dog, the Pomeranian has an alert and curious personality. It is the ideal dog for apartment dwellers. Though very active indoors they do not need a yard to be exercised.

Like any other breed the Pomeranian has health issues it may be prone to including skin problems, eye infections, slipped stifle, dislocated patella and heart problems. Poms can have problems with their teeth and gums so good dental hygiene is a must.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND STEM ENHANCE AND STEM EQUINE

Using a chemical free method the makers of Stem Enhance and Stem Equine extract two compounds from the blue-green algae, Cyanophyta Aphanizomenon Filos, in Klamath Lake. The first compound, an L-selectin ligand, will stimulate your horse’s bone marrow to produce more adult stem cells. This increase is usually by 30%. The second compound, a polysaccharide rich substance called Migratose TM, assists these brand new cells in their migration towards the damaged tissue in your horse’s body. The effects of these stem cell enhancers was proven in a triple blind test conducted by StemEnhance and controlled by Christian Drapeau Msc. As with any treatment or remedy it is best to consult your veterinarian about the possible interactions with other medications that your hors is currently taking.

Using solid science and a bold approach, Stem Enhance has discovered the advantages of the stem cell enhancers in Stem Equine. No one is claiming a great feat of chemical engineering. These are all natural, botanical products that help your horse’s body repair itself. Your animal’s bone marrow will not be damaged or compromised in any way. In fact, if the adult stem cells are not used immediately they return to the bone marrow and are available for use at a later time. No miracles or gimmicks, just solid science and the desire of Stem Enhance and Stem Equine to help your horse live a more tranquil life.

Tips On House Training Your Dog

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

House training your dog can be an extremely frustrating process, especially when it seems like sweet little Rover is just never going to get it. The three most common house training problems in dogs are:

1) Submissive / Excited Urination
2) Scent Marking
3) You Forgot To Let The Dog Out!

Problem #1: submissive / excited urination

What is it?
A ’submissive urinator’ is a dog that urinates on the floor or himself (and sometimes on you or any guests you may have!) in situations of extreme excitement or stress, like when you return home at the end of the day, or when he’s being scolded.

Why does it happen?
Puppies are the usual candidates for submissive/excited urination, but it’s not uncommon to see adult dogs with the problem as well. Usually, these are highly sensitive and timid dogs and/or ones from a shelter with a history of abuse (often these last two go hand-in-hand.)

When does it happen?
Situations when an excited/submissive dog is likely to urinate:
- Greeting time after a prolonged absence
- Play time
- The arrival of guests
- Stressful situations at home, e.g. arguments
- During a correction or reprimand
- Sudden loud noises (thunder, fireworks)

What can I do about it?
Fortunately, it’s not difficult to “cure” your dog of his submissive/excited urination. First of all, you should take him to the vet to make sure there’s no medical reason for the issue, like diabetes or a bladder infection. Next, it’s time to take control of the problem…

Ideas For Keeping Puppies

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Puppies are placed with Puppy Raising families at seven to eight weeks of age. They remain there until they are in the neighbourhood of twelve months old. Puppies are always Veterinarian checked before they leave us, and are started on heartworm preventative. Puppies are born with closed eyes, so they can not see and they also can not produce any body heat themselves the first 10 - 14 days. While their eyes are closed we make sure to talk a lot, touch them and hold them close when we see to them, so they stay to one’s liking and loving.

Puppies are born with abilities that barely extend beyond suckling and sleeping. During the first few weeks, they pile on one another in an trial to conserve body heat and paddle over to the nearest teat for nourishment. Puppies are very defenceless to intestinal parasites. Some intestinal parasites like hookworms are so displeasing that they may kill a puppy and may be transmitted to humans. Puppies are all in all removed at seven weeks of age. They are then sold to brokers who pack them in crates for transport and sale to pet shops. Keeping track of your puppy’s weight is very momentous, with puppy weight estimates, you can feed your puppies with preferable diet and keep them hardy and hardy.

Nutrition And Supplements For Your Cat

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

What should you be feeding your cat?

You need to consider what cats will need in the wild to determine the best food sources for them. In the wild, cats will eat mice and birds, and drink water. Obviously this is a diet high in protein and it is essential that your cat gets sufficient protein to maintain a good healthy diet.

What many people don’t realize is that cats can get diabetes from having a diet that is too high in carbohydrates. By constantly feeding your cat carbohydrates it can become insulin resistant and unable to keep its blood glucose levels at a suitable level. Some signs that your cat is becoming diabetic include drinking a lot of water and eating considerably more than they usually do. You might also notice a sign of weakness in the back legs as they tend to wobble a bit when walking.

The only way to be sure whether your cat is developing diabetes is to give it a blood test.
This is the best way to determine whether the cat has diabetes or not. Although you can do a urine analysis to check blood glucose levels, but this is not as accurate. Unlike humans and other animals it is possible for cats that have diabetes to go into remission provided their diet has been changed with an elimination of high carbohydrate foods. More protein will help to stabilize the blood glucose levels.

Dry biscuits are particularly bad for cats as they are generally very high in carbohydrates and even though your cat might love eating them, because of the additives that have been put into these dry foods, it certainly won’t do their health a lot of good. The reason why these dry biscuits are so popular is because of the convenience and the fact that cats are very fussy eaters. Most cats like dry biscuits except possibly those that have been found straying in the wild.

Provided you are giving your cat a balanced diet there should be no need to give it additional amounts of supplements. In fact by adding additional vitamins and minerals to your cat’s diet you could actually be upsetting the natural balance of the nutrition and doing more harm than good.

Many of the commercial cat foods are nutritionally complete and balanced and no additional supplements will need to be added if you are feeding your cat these types of foods. If you are feeding your cat on a raw food diet that represents the types of foods that it would eat in the wild then it should be nutritionally balanced with sufficient protein and the essential vitamins and minerals that it needs to remain healthy.

The only time where you might need to give your cat additional vitamin supplements is during times of illness, or where there are other factors involved such as loss of body fluids or diarrhea. Even in these circumstances it is wise to check with your vet first to ensure that these additional supplements will not cause any other problems.

If you feel that the nutrition of your cat is not up to par then by all means you will need to consider supplementing its diet. Be sure that you have gotten good advice on the matter. There are a lot of good cat vitamin and mineral supplements on the market and they can help improve your cat’s health particularly as your cat ages but it is best to give these to your pet based on sound advice from a good vet.

It is well worth discussing with your vet any changes that need to be made to your cat’s diet during the various stages of its life. Nutritional needs tend to change somewhat as the cat ages and there are some good commercial products that help with fur balls and other problems that specific breeds of cats may have.  Cats that are well cared for will live a lot longer than what could be expected in the wild and for that reason, as with people, aged cats can require additional supplementation.

Cozy Cat Carriers – Where to Find

Friday, April 25th, 2008

My cat has a skin problem which requires constant trips to the vet. I feel bad putting him in the clunky plastic box (aka cat carrier). He can’t be comfortable in there. That’s why I’m looking for suggestions on more comfortable types of carriers. I’ve looked on the Internet for some more cozy boxes but I don’t really know where to begin. I’ve found a few cat carriers that appear to be more comforting and accommodating, but I just can’t tell by looking at pictures online. Does anyone know of specific brands or types of carriers that are known to be more comforting for cats?

Airline Approved Pet Carriers Let You Bring Your Pomeranian On The Plane

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The love for your pet Pomeranian dog knows no bounds, and that’s why buying airline approved pet carriers is a must for any pet owner who is traveling with his animal by air. You need to find a good carrier that will keep your pet comfortable and free to move, while at the same time meeting airline regulations. Then you can be sure that they will be safe and secure in their carrier for the whole trip.

Proper fit inside the pet carrier you choose is essential for your pet’s comfort. The animal should have enough room for both reclining as well as turning. It’s imperative that your airline approved pet carriers satisfy your pet’s demands in these areas. Your vacation could be postponed because of failure to find an airline-approved carrier ahead of time for your air travel.

It’s common knowledge that smaller luggage is much easier to travel with. This means that when shopping for a pet carrier, you should make note of which ones have wheels for easy transport. Whether you have a St. Bernard or a Chihuahua, this makes sense. A wheeled carrier will be more comfortable for your pet and easier on your back too.

Exotic Pointers For Curing Fish Diseases

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Fish diseases are demanding to discern accurately, and treating them right now is almost always dependent on formal and early diagnosis. Accurate diagnosis, in almost all cases requires tissue sampling and/or biopsy or necropsy, and these issues take us back to seeing a qualified veterinarian or fish pathologist. Fish diseases are categorized as infectious and non-infectious diseases. The infectious diseases have the greatest impact. Fish diseases are controlled by using approved chemicals applied either in the feed or water.

Bacteria, virus and fungus are other micro organisms that can cause dire difficulties in a freshwater aquarium. The preferred treatment will naturally depend on the specific infection. Bacteria, as it turns out, are adaptive little critters. If unbeaten conditions are not carefully maintained, or an infected fish is brought into the colony, an infectious microorganism can be introduced that will devastate a population of fish. Bacteria can set in if it is grave, but just not being quite as speedy as the others come feeding time could lead to starvation. Bacteria can enter the fish’s body through the gills or skin or it can stay on the surface of the fish’s body. If your fish is suffering from Ich disease, you need to treat it straight away before it is too late.

How To Teach Your Dog To Heel

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

It’s always safe and convenient to teach your puppy how to heel. Do you want to teach your dog how to turn on command? To teach him to turn right, bend your knees and hold the food near his nose, turn right and repeat the command “heel”, he will be required to speed up to follow you and will follow the smell of the treat with little or no resistance.

Teaching him to turn left is a little different; use your left hand at his collar to guide him to the left use the command “steady” hold the treat low and in front of his nose, the puppy will follow.

Are Cat Strollers For Real?

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Choosing good cat strollers might be a matter of taste and how much you wish to use one. If you don’t have a lot of room, you will want to find a smaller one that can fold up for easy storage. You obviously want to get one that will work well for your pet, but most cats will go in most models of cat strollers. If you have an exceptionally large breed, your cat may be the exceptions. There will be strollers for cats that are larger, but you may have to search a little to find them. Over all, think about the comfort of your pet and how much room you have when you are choosing.

You can look in your local pet store for cat strollers, but you may have better luck and a bigger variety when you look online. There may be some in your local store, but you may not find one that works well for you. Try to find an online seller that will allow you to send them back if it is the wrong size or it doesn’t work well for your pet. Remember, they need room to move around within the strollers for cats, so getting just the right size is very important.

Tips For Buying Fish Tank Lights For Your Aquarium

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

When you decide on better fish tank lights for your tank, you’ll immediately see the results, and the tank will benefit, too.  The best conditions for fish and plants involve twelve hours of light, which will help them to feel as though they’re in a natural situation.  If you’re worried about erratic lighting patterns, which may disturb your fish, buy a timer for your lighting system.

If you want your fish tank to really impress, use fluorescent fish tank lights that is closer to natural sunlight and will showcase your colorful fish better.  Lots of heat is emitted by incandescent lighting, so don’t use it around your fish tank or you may discover dead fish as a result of water that has gotten too warm.

If you want to grow plants in your fish tank, you cannot use typical aquarium lighting, because most plants will only grown under a full-spectrum fluorescent bulb or tri-phosphor fluorescent tubes that concentrate light in the red-blue-green range in the spectrum.

When you add corals to your tank, you’ll also need to strengthen your fish tank lighting system.  Your reef aquarium will probably need a lighting system that can provide between 5 and 8 watts per gallon.

Airline Approved Pet Carriers Make Travel Less Stressful

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Using airline approved pet carriers can make traveling with your dog less nerve-wracking. When it comes to pet carriers, you want to be sure that you are absolutely certain before heading to the airport that you understand all of the requirements and guidelines that you will need to meet if you’re going to be allowed to take your pet on board. You and your pet will be very upset if you find out that your pet carrier is not ‘flyable’ once you arrive at the airport. Of course, always traveling with an airline approved carrier will save the bother of dealing with this type of situation.

How big your pet is will mostly decide how your pet will be riding out the flight. If you wish to travel with your large dog, he’ll have to be stored in the cargo area of the plane. This is a reason that you might have to spring for an oversized regulation pet carrier. Your name, address, and final destination will be recorded before your pet is allowed to check in. The carrier will be tagged with the information, just in case your flight and your animal might ever get separated.

If your pet is small, you can actually bring him on the flight as a carry on. If you have an acceptable airline-approved pet carrier with you, then this should be alright. Each airline publishes the maximum carry-on dimensions allowed for luggage and pet carriers must also meet this. You should place the carrier on the floor under the seat in front of you as opposed to overhead. Following this suggestion means that your animal will rest more easily, safely tucked near you.

Travel Easier With Airline Approved Pet Carriers

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Your pet is a member of the family, so of course you’ll want to be sure that their safety is in good hands; that’s why you’ll want to get some good airline approved pet carriers for travel. Your pet needs a carrier that gives him leeway to move and rest, so try to find one that satisfies your pet’s requirements and those of your airline. Then you can be confident that they will always be safe and secure in their carrier when they are traveling.

Proper fit inside the pet carrier you choose is essential for your pet’s comfort. The animal should have enough room for both reclining as well as turning. This criteria applies to all airline approved pet carriers. If your carrier fails to meet these standards, your trip will have to be delayed as you make other arrangements for your pet.

It’s common knowledge that smaller luggage is much easier to travel with. This means that when shopping for a pet carrier, you should make note of which ones have wheels for easy transport. This holds true whether your purchase is for a tiny dog or a gigantic one. Its a lot of work carrying your pet, why not let them ride in style in a nice wheeled pet carrier.
