Thursday, March 4th, 2010

An upset stomach is a condition that most of us have from time to time. But when it gets to severe it might be the time to contact a doctor. Irregular bowel movement, stomach pains, heartburn, and constipation can all be symptoms of an upset stomach, and signs to watch for if you experiencing discomfort. Reflux Oesophagitis is the common term for an upset stomach, and can be made worse by the usual suspects such as alcohol, fatty foods, and coffee, but also from lesser known triggers such as citrus and onions. If you have Reflux Oesophagitis it will probably feel like heartburn, and might even give you a taste of bile in your mouth.

An upset stomach can also be caused by ulcers, and since the symptoms are so similar it might be mistaken for Reflux. Things to look for that point to ulcers are black stools and weight loss. If you see these symptoms it is a clear sign that you should visit your doctor as soon as possible, where you probably will be treated with antibiotics or other anti-ulcer medicine.

The third possible reason why you are having an upset stomach might be irritable bowel syndrome. The signs of this condition is that you will feel pain after eating, and that a bowel movement reliefs some of the pain.

Cures for upset stomachs depend on what is causing the condition. As mentioned, antibiotics are used frequently when bacteria is the cause. Other medicines include acid neutralizers, anti-diarrhea, and other anti-bacterial. Some doctors also prescribe a special diet which excludes certain foods that might worsen your condition.

There are also a host of different home cures and natural remedies that you can try. Peppermint tea is a popular drink that is said to remedy an upset stomach. So is eating fresh ginger and honey.
