Considering Online Masters Degrees?

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Now we’ve all heard of online schools offering online masters degrees or even bachelors degrees or associates degrees. Now there are two questions on most people’s minds. Do you learn about as much as a comparable degree at physical schools? And also, do employers recognize them if they are from accredited online schools? The misconceptions are “no” and “no”, but the truth may surprise you. Just think about it, how hard is it for online classes to use the same curriculum as the average brick and mortar schools? And if they use the same materials, it goes without saying that you can test students just as accurately (if not more) via online testing, especially if a test is timed. Student to student interactions can also happen easily through the internet for mutual learning group dynamics. So if you really think about it, if you don’t have a cynical attitude about online schools, they can be every bit as good as any school, or every bit as useless as any school.

Now as to whether employers recognize online degrees, it will vary from employer to employer. Obviously, if the person in charge, namely your boss has a cynical attitude about online schools without thinking about what it actually takes to graduate from one, then sure, it may not be recognized. However, if the employer is logical and understands the online school without cynicism or prejudice, they may very well recognize it as long as the online school is accredited.
