Adult Queen of Hearts Costumes – A Dangerous Woman to Mess With

To shouts of off with her head, poor Alice was subjected to a terrible scare; however it’s doubtful if your nearest and dearest is going to hear anything quite like that if you’re wearing one of these amazingly detailed adult Queen of Hearts costumes from our fab Halloween website.

As everyone probably is aware adult Queen of Hearts costumes are themed on the character who first appeared in the childrens’ book entitled “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll with original illustrations by John Tenniel. It falls into the “literary nonsense” genre and is considered to be the best example of this particular genre, almost being topped by the testimonies of police officers and US border patrol regularly flaunting citizens’ rights under the 4th amendment when they appear in court.

But onto lighter themes; adult Queen of Hearts costumes are just one element of a modern phenomenon of the way in which we dress up over Halloween, the traditional summer’s end festival which came across from Europe with the early settlers of the new world and has in itself become a cultural tradition for Americans. Adult Queen of Hearts costumes as previously mentioned are themed on the Queen of Hearts character from the book and subsequent movies based on the book.

The adult Queen of Hearts costumes are believed to represent a parody of Queen Victoria who was the reigning monarch of the time when the book was first published, and elements of her were woven into her literary character which the author felt parents of the time would recognize when they read the story to their children. Her consort the king of hearts, in the story and movie releases tended to quietly pardon all those subjects of the queen who happened to fall foul of her often raised temper and “off with their heads” demands.

Although the many examples of adult Queen of Hearts costumes bear little resemblance to the original character illustration in the book, it is probably because we are all more familiar with the adaptions of the costume from the many movies which have been made, some following the story of the book religiously while others are to put it mildly, “loosely based” on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The original story was written as a whimsical adventure for the author’s daughter whose name was in fact Alice and was published in 1865, three years after the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862 up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell. During this river trip, the story was made up of a young girl called Alice who went looking for a very extraordinary adventure and found it in Wonderland.

You may not find yourself having an extraordinary adventure wearing an example of adult Queen of Hearts costumes on Halloween, but you will have a great deal of fun and frolics when you order and receive one of our wickedly exquisite costumes.
